Finishing your Story
by Bruce L. Cook

It's important to conclude your story. Don't fail to finish it. This seems obvious but give it some thoughts.

Aa an example, Blind Search by Paula Munier (just featured in Reader's Digest Editions), neglected to tie things up at the end. This does seem strange because writers have a duty to complete their work, offering some kind of closure.

Let's think of stories where the ending might not follow this rule.

If a story is part of a series, each edition needs to resolve its conflicts. However, in this case, it's also important to leave some conflicts unresolved. After all, it's the unresolved conflicts that motivate readers to read the next book in the series.

For another example, think of an old favorite, John Fowles' “The French Lieutenant’s Woman.” That story opens with an observer setting the time on a clock. Later the story ends in a way the reader would never choose. Finally (and thankfully), the clock is wound back, and the story ends happily. The reader can choose the favorite ending by simply going back in time.

Ultimately, can we agree that a writer needs to complete the story, resolving the details and, hopefully, proving whatever the story set out to prove?
