Writing a Synopsis

Scenario - you have written a 60,000-word novel. Now you must write an000-word synopsis before anyone will consider it for publication.
You have created a web of characters and events and know every detail. Now you are trying to view the story from outside this web. Amazingly, when starting out you risk writing a disjointed collection of pieces.
How can you include everything, explaining the story, without repeating all 60,000 words?
Since you will probably find yourself too close to the story, it's vital to have a tough reviewer (who doesn't know the story) read the synopsis and identify every detail and theme that proves confusing.
Include events from the story, but don't neglect clear descriptions of characters, locations, and motivations.
Most importantly, every part of the ending must tie back to something already mentioned earlier in the synopsis.
You can copy/paste extracts from the novel, but just use this to be accurate. Especially, in vital parts (like the conclusion), it's worthwhile to copy, paste, and trim down. That way the synopsis will accurately reflect the story you are summarizing.
Once you and the reviewer are done, be willing to revise the novel (and synopsis) to correct the problems you both discovered while writing the synopsis
Then, give that 60,000-word monster one more revision. As always, revise and revise. This can be an exercise in perpetual motion.
