Stop Asking for Permission in your Writing

By Kelly Morgan is the indie author and founder of Bright Headed Publishing, LLC. She hosts The Author’s Mic™ and BTA Fridays – Breaking the Algorithm™,

Most of us hesitate to publish because it feels like putting a piece of ourselves out there — and that’s vulnerable. Maybe we’re waiting for validation, or for someone to tell us the book is “good enough.” Maybe we just don’t want to get it wrong.

But here’s what I’ve learned: no one’s going to show up and say, “Okay, now you’re ready.” You decide that. You give yourself permission the moment you choose to move anyway — scared, unsure, unpolished — but moving.

When I finally stopped asking for permission, I started to actually listen to myself. And once I did, the writing began to flow because I was showing up as me. Not the version I thought readers wanted, not the one the industry expected — just the truth of my experience, my perspective, my voice.

That’s when everything shifted. The words sounded like me again. The stories felt like mine again. And that’s when people started connecting — not because it was perfect, but because it was real.

Authenticity is what readers remember. It’s the difference between a book that fills space and one that fills somebody’s spirit. You don’t have to perform for the industry. You don’t need to fit into their boxes or chase their trends. The moment you claim your own voice, you’ve already broken the algorithm.

So if you’ve been waiting for someone to tell you it’s okay to start — this is it. You don’t need permission. You need honesty, consistency, and courage to show up as you.

Write the story only you can tell. That’s what makes it powerful. That’s what makes it yours.

Keep Writing!
