Bruce L. Cook - Environment in Fiction

In writing, we focus on action. character and background. When doing this, do we risk the absence of environment?

We may start by placing a notable character in a conflict-filled setting, perhaps at a local sports bar. This would seem fine.

However, could the story improve if it opened with a scene in the street garden across from the bar? Perhaps the sound of birds or the presence of rabbits?

While this may seem arbitrary, it can enhance the feeling of realism, especially when the characters are involved in highly unexpected behaviors.

Further, environment can allow dramatic moments to be especially poignant because events are accompanied by new natural winds, rains, chirps, or animal movements.

Next time you write, or next time you revise, consider these ideas and strengthen your story. Do let me know how it works for you.
