Mystery of Creation3. Some Instances of Mass Destruction and their Causes

10:24. The similitude of the life of the world is only as water which We send down from the sky, then the earth's growth of that which men and cattle eat mingles with it till, when the earth has taken on her ornaments and is embellished, and her people deem that they are masters of her, Our commandment comes by night or by day and We make it as reaped corn as if it had not flourished yesterday. Thus do we expound the revelations for people who reflect. ¡

32:21. And verily We make them taste the smaller punishment before the greater, that probably  they may return.
32:22. And who does greater wrong than he who is reminded of the revelations of his Lord, then turns from them. Lo! We shall requite the guilty. ¡

25:39. Each (of them) We warned by examples, and each (of them) We brought to utter ruin. ¡

10:88. And Moses said: Our Lord! Look! You have given Pharaoh and his chiefs splendor and riches in the life of the world, Our Lord! that they may lead men astray from your way. Our Lord! Destroy their riches and harden their hearts so that they believe not till they see the painful doom.

11:84. And to Midian (We sent) their brother Shu'eyb. He said: O my people! Serve Allah. you have no other Allah except Him! And give not short measure and short weight. Look! I see you well-to-do, and Look! I fear for you the doom of a besetting Day. ¡

12:105. How many a portent is there in the heavens and the earth which they pass by with face averted!
12:106. And most of them believe not in Allah except that they attribute partners (unto Him).
12:107. Deem they themselves secure from the coming on them of a pall of Allah's punishment, or the coming of the Hour suddenly while they are unaware? ¡

13:31. Had it been possible for a Lecture to cause the mountains to move, or the earth to be torn asunder, or the dead to speak, (this Qur'an would have done so). Nay, but Allah's is the whole command. Do not those who believe know that, had Allah willed, He could have guided all mankind? As for those who disbelieve, disaster ceases not to strike them because of what they do, or it dwells near their home until the threat of Allah come to pass. Look! Allah fails not to keep the tryst. ¡

56:68. Have you observed the water which you drink?
56:69. Is it you who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder?
56:70. If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give you not thanks?
56:71. Have you observed the fire which you strike out. ¡

46:24. Then, when they beheld it as a dense cloud coming toward their valleys, they said: Here is a cloud bringing us rain. Nay, but it is that which you did seek to hasten, a wind wherein is painful torment. ¡

4:47. O you (all) to whom the Scripture has been given! Believe in what We have revealed confirming that which you (all) possess, before We destroy countenances so as to confound them, or curse them as We cursed the Sabbath-breakers (of old time). The commandment of Allah is always executed. ¡

6: 6. See they not how many a generation We destroyed before them, whom We had established in the earth more firmly than We have established you, and We shed on them abundant showers from the sky, and made the rivers flow beneath them. Yet we destroyed them for their sins, and created after them another generation. ¡

6:70. And forsake those who take their religion for a pastime and a jest, and whom the life of the world beguileth. Remind (mankind) hereby lest a soul be destroyed by what it earneth. It has beside Allah no protecting ally nor intercessor, and though it offer every compensation it will not be accepted from it. Those are they who perish by their own deserts. For them is drink of boiling water and a painful doom, because they disbelieved. ¡

6:131. This is because your Lord does not destroy the townships arbitrarily while their people are unconscious (of the wrong they do). ¡

7: 4. How many a township have We destroyed! As a raid by night, or while they slept at noon, Our terror came to them. 7: 5. No plea had they, when Our terror came to them, save that they said: Look! We were wrong-doers. ¡

7:129. They said: We suffered hurt before you camest to us, and since you hast come to us. He said: It may be that your Lord is going to destroy your adversary and make you viceroys in the earth, that He may see how you (all) behave. ¡

7:138. And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came to a people who were given up to idols which they had. They said: O Moses! Make for us a god even as they have gods. He said: Look! you (all) are a folk who know not.
7:139. Look! as for these, their way will be destroyed and all that they are doing is in vain. 7:140. He said: Shall I seek for you a god other than Allah when He has favoured you above (all) creatures? ¡
7:155. And Moses chose of his people seventy men for Our appointed tryst and, when the trembling came on them, he said: My Lord! If You hadst willed You hadst destroyed them long before, and me with them. Will you destroy us for that which the ignorant among us did? It is but your trial (of us). You sendest whom You will astray and guidest whom You wilt: You art our Protecting Friend, therefore forgive us and have mercy on us, You, the Best of all who show forgiveness. ¡

7:163. Ask them (O Muhammad) of the township that was by the sea, how they did break the Sabbath, how their big fish came to them visibly upon their Sabbath day and on a day when they did not keep Sabbath came they not to them. Thus did We try them for that they were evil-livers. 7:164. And when a community among them said: Why preach you (all) to a folk whom Allah is about to destroy or punish with an awful doom, they said: In order to be free from guilt before your Lord, and that haply they may ward off (evil). 7:165. And when they forgot that about which they had been reminded, We rescued those who forbade wrong, and visited those who did wrong with dreadful punishment because they were evil-livers. 7:166. So when they took pride in that which they had been forbidden, We said to them: Be you (all) apes despised and loathed!¡
7:167. And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed that He would raise against them till the Day of Resurrection those who would lay on them a cruel torment. Look! Certainly your Lord is swift in prosecution and Look! Certainly He is Forgiving, Merciful. ¡

7:172. And (remember) when your Lord brought forth from the Children of Adam, from their reins, their seed, and made them testify of themselves, (saying): Am I not your Lord? They said: Yea, Certainly. We testify. (That was) lest you (all) should say at the Day of Resurrection: Look! of this we were unaware; 7:173. Or lest you (all) should say: (It is) only (that) our fathers ascribed partners to Allah of old and we were (their) seed after them. Will You destroy us on account of that which those who follow falsehood did? 7:174. Thus we detail the revelations, that haply they may return.¡

8:54. (Their way is) as the way of Pharaoh's folk and those before them; they denied the revelations of their Lord, so We destroyed them in their sins. And We drowned the folk of Pharaoh. All were evil-doers. ¡

10:13. We destroyed the generations before you when they did wrong; and their messengers (from Allah) came to them with clear proofs (of His Sovereignty) but they would not believe. Thus do We reward the guilty folk. 10:14. Then We appointed you viceroys in the earth after them, that We might see how you (all) behave. ¡

10:88. And Moses said: Our Lord! Look! You hast given Pharaoh and his chiefs splendour and riches in the life of the world, Our Lord! that they may lead men astray from your way. Our Lord! Destroy their riches and harden their hearts so that they believe not till they see the painful doom. ¡

10:89. He said: Your prayer is heard. Do you (all) twain keep to the straight path, and follow not the road of those who have no knowledge.
10:90. And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh with his hosts pursued them in rebellion and transgression, till, when the (fate of) drowning overtook him, he exclaimed: I believe that there is no Allah except Him in Whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of those who surrender (unto Him). ¡

10:91. What! Now! When hitherto you hast rebelled and been of the wrong-doers?
10:92. But this day We save you in your body that you may be a portent for those after you. Look! most of mankind are heedless of Our portents. ¡

10:98. If only there had been a community (of all those that were destroyed of old) that believed and profited by its belief as did the folk of Jonah! When they believed We drew off from them the torment of disgrace in the life of the world and gave them comfort for a while. ¡

11:100. That is (something) of the tidings of the townships (which were destroyed of old). We relate it to you (Muhammad). Some of them are standing and some (already) reaped.
11:101. We wronged them not, but they did wrong themselves; and their gods on whom they call beside Allah availed them naught when came your Lord's command; they added to them naught save ruin.
11:102. Even thus is the grasp of your Lord when He grasps the townships while they are doing wrong. Look! His grasp is painful, very strong.
11:103. Look! herein Certainly there is a portent for those who fear the doom of the Hereafter. That is a day to which mankind will be gathered, and that is a day that will be witnessed. ¡

11:117. In truth your Lord destroyed not the townships tyrannously while their folk were doing right. [1] ¡

14:13. And those who disbelieved said to their messengers: Certainly we will drive you out from our land, unless you (all) return to our religion. Then their Lord inspired them, (saying): Certainly we shall destroy the wrong-doers. ¡

15: 3. Let them eat and enjoy life, and let (false) hope beguile them. They will come to know! 15: 4. And We destroyed no township but there was a known decree for it. 15: 5. No nation can outstrip its term nor can they lag behind. ¡

17:16. And when We would destroy a township We send commandment to its folk who live at ease, and afterward they commit abomination therein, and so the Word (of doom) has effect for it, and we annihilate it with complete annihilation. 17:17. How many generations have We destroyed since Noah! And Allah suffices as Knower and Beholder of the sins of His slaves. 17:18. Whoso desires that (life) which hastens away, We hasten for him therein what We will for whom We please. And afterward We have appointed for him hell; he will endure the heat thereof, condemned, rejected. 17:19. And whoso desires the Hereafter and strives for it with the effort necessary, being a believer; for such, their effort finds favour (with their Lord). ¡

17:58. There is not a township but We shall destroy it ere the Day of Resurrection, or punish it with dire punishment. That is set forth in the Book (of Our decrees). ¡

18:58. your Lord is the Forgiver, Full of Mercy. If He took them to task (now) for what they earn, He would hasten on the doom for them; but theirs is an appointed term from which they will find no escape18:59. And (all) those townships! We destroyed them when they did wrong, and We appointed a fixed time for their destruction. ¡

19:74. How many a generation have We destroyed before them, who were more imposing in respect of gear and outward seeming!
19:75. Say: As for him who is in error, the Beneficent will verily prolong his span of life until, when they behold that which they were promised, whether it be punishment (in the world), or the Hour (of doom), they will know who is worse in position and who is weaker as an army.
19:76. Allah increases in right guidance those who walk aright, and the good deeds which endure are better in your Lord's sight for reward, and better for resort.
19:77. Hast you seen him who disbelieves in Our revelations and says: Assuredly I shall be given wealth and children?
19:78. Hath he perused the Unseen, or hath he made a pact with the Beneficent? ¡

19:79. Nay, but We shall record that which he says and prolong for him a span of torment.

19:98. And how many a generation before them have We destroyed! can you (Muhammad) see a single man of them, or hear from them the slightest sound? ¡

20:128. Is it not a guidance for them (to know) how many a generation We destroyed before them, amid whose dwellings they walk? Lo! therein verily are signs for men of thought.
20:129. And but for a decree that had already gone forth from your Lord, and a term already fixed, the judgment would have been inevitable (in this world). ¡

20:134. And if we had destroyed them with some punishment before it, they would assuredly have said: Our Lord! If only you hadst sent to us a messenger, so that we might have followed your revelations before we were (thus) humbled and disgraced! ¡

21: 6. Not a township believed of those which We destroyed before them (though We sent them portents): would they then believe? ¡

21: 9. Then we fulfilled the promise to them. So we delivered them and whom We would, and We destroyed the prodigals.
21:10. Now We have revealed to you a Scripture wherein is your Reminder. Have you (all) then no sense?
21:11. How many a community that dealt unjustly have We shattered, and raised up after them another folk!
21:12. And, when they felt Our might, behold them fleeing from it!
21:13. (But it was said to them): Flee not, but return to that (existence) which emasculated you and to your dwellings, that you (all) may be questioned.
21:14. They cried: Alas for us! we were wrong-doers.
21:15. And this their crying ceased not till We made them as reaped corn, extinct.
21:16. We created not the heaven and the earth and all that is between them in play.
21:17. If We had wished to find a pastime, We could have found it in Our presence - if We ever did. ¡

21:94. Then whoso does some good works and is a believer, there will be no rejection of his effort. Lo! We record (it) for him.
21:95. And there is a ban upon any community which We have destroyed: that they shall not return.
21:96. Until, when Gog and Magog are let loose, and they hasten out of every mound. ¡

22:45. How many a township have We destroyed while it was sinful, so that it lies (to this day) in ruins, and (how many) a deserted well and lofty tower!
22:46. Have they not travelled in the land, and have they hearts wherewith to feel and ears wherewith to hear? For indeed it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts, which are within the bosoms, that grow blind. ¡

22:48. And how many a township did I suffer long though it was sinful! Then I grasped it. to Me is the return.  ¡
25:36. Then We said: Go together to the folk who have denied Our revelations. Then We destroyed them, a complete destruction.
25:37. And Noah's folk, when they denied the messengers, We drowned them and made of them a portent for mankind. We have prepared a painful doom for evil-doers.
25:38. And (the tribes of) A'ad and Thamud, and the dwellers in Ar-Rass, and many generations in between.
25:39. Each (of them) We warned by examples, and each (of them) We brought to utter ruin.
25:40. And indeed they have passed by the township whereon was rained the fatal rain. Can it be that they have not seen it? Nay, but they hope for no resurrection. ¡

26:139. And they denied him; therefore We destroyed them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers.
26:140. And lo! your Lord, He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.
26:141. (The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah)
26:142. When their brother Salih said to them: Will you (all) not ward off (evil)?
26:143. Lo! I am a faithful messenger to you,
26:144. So keep your duty to Allah and obey me.
26:145. And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds.
26:146. Will you (all) be left secure in that which is here before us,
26:147. In gardens and watersprings.
26:148. And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees,
26:149. Though you (all) hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful?
26:150. Therefore keep your duty to Allah and obey me,
26:151. And obey not the command of the prodigal,
26:152. Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. ¡

26:172. Then afterward We destroyed the others.
26:173. And We rained on them a rain. And dreadful is the rain of those who have been warned.
26:174. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. ¡

26:208. And We destroyed no township but it had its warners
26:209. For reminder, for We never were oppressors.  ¡

27:51. Then see the nature of the consequence of their plotting, for lo! We destroyed them and their people, every one.
27:52. See, yonder are their dwellings empty and in ruins because they did wrong. Lo! herein is indeed a portent for a people who have knowledge.
27:53. And we saved those who believed and used to ward off (evil).
27:54. And Lot! when he said to his folk: Will you (all) commit abomination knowingly?
27:55. Must you (all) needs lust after men instead of women? Nay, but you (all) are folk who act senselessly.
27:56. But the answer of his folk was naught save that they said: Expel the household of Lot from your township, for they (forsooth) are folk who would keep clean!
27:57. Then We saved him and his household save his wife; We destined her to be of those who stayed behind.
27:58. And We rained a rain upon them. Dreadful is the rain of those who have been warned.
27:59. Say (O Muhammad): Praise be to Allah, and peace be on His slaves whom He hath chosen! Is Allah best, or (all) that you (all) ascribe as partners (unto Him)? ¡

28:58. And how many a community have We destroyed that was thankless for its means of livelihood! And yonder are their dwellings, which have not been inhabited after them save a little. And We, even We, were the inheritors.
28:59. And never did your Lord destroy the townships, till He had raised up in their mother(-town) a messenger reciting to them Our revelations. And never did We destroy the townships unless the folk thereof were evil-doers.
28:60. And whatsoever you (all) have been given is a comfort of the life of the world and an ornament thereof; and that which Allah hath is better and more lasting. Have you (all) then no sense?  ¡

22:40. Those who have been driven from their homes unjustly only because they said: Our Lord is Allah - For had it not been for Allah's repelling some men by means of others, cloisters and churches and oratories and mosques, wherein the name of Allah is oft mentioned, would assuredly have been pulled down. Verily Allah helps one who helps Him. Lo! Allah is Strong, Almighty -
22:41. Those who, if We give them power in the land, establish worship and pay the poor-due and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity. And Allah's is the sequel of events.
22:42. If they deny you (Muhammad), even so the folk of Noah, and (the tribes of) A'ad and Thamud, before you, denied (Our messengers);
22:43. And the folk of Abraham and the folk of Lot;
22:44. (And) the dwellers in Midian. And Moses was denied; but I indulged the disbelievers a long while, then I seized them, and how (terrible) was My abhorrence!

23:76. Already have We grasped them with punishment, but they humble not themselves to their Lord, nor do they pray,
23:77. Until, when We open for them the gate of extreme punishment, behold! they are aghast thereat.
23:78. He it is Who hath created for you ears and eyes and hearts. Small thanks give ye! ¡

24:19. Lo! those who love that slander should be spread concerning those who believe, theirs will be a painful punishment in the world and the Hereafter. Allah knows. you (all) know not.
24:20. Had it not been for the grace of Allah and His mercy to you, and that Allah is Clement, Merciful, (ye had been undone).
24:21. O you (all) who believe! Follow not the footsteps of the devil. To whomsoever follows the footsteps of the devil, lo! he commands filthiness and wrong. Had it not been for the grace of Allah and His mercy to you, not one of you would ever have grown pure. But Allah causes whom He will to grow. And Allah is Hearer, Knower. ¡

24:63. Make not the calling of the messenger among you as your calling one of another. Allah knows those of you who steal away, hiding themselves. And let those who conspire to evade orders beware lest grief or painful punishment befall them.  ¡

29:10. Of mankind is he who says: We believe in Allah, but, if he be made to suffer for the sake of Allah, he mistakes the persecution of mankind for Allah's punishment; and then, if victory comes from your Lord, will say: Lo! we were with you (all the while). Is not Allah Best Aware of what is in the bosoms of (His) creatures? ¡

29:21. He punishes whom He will and shows mercy to whom He will, and to Him you (all) will be turned.
29:22. you (all) cannot escape (from Him) in the earth or in the sky, and beside Allah there is for you no friend or helper. ¡

40: 3. The Forgiver of sin, the Accepter of repentance, the Stern in punishment, the Bountiful. There is no Allah save Him. to Him is the journeying.
40: 4. None argue concerning the revelations of Allah save those who disbelieve, so let not their turn of fortune in the land deceive you (O Muhammad).  ¡

4:153. The people of the Scripture ask of you that you shouldst cause an (actual) Book to descend upon them from heaven. They asked a greater thing of Moses before, for they said: Show us Allah plainly. The storm of lightning seized them for their wickedness. Then (even) after that) they chose the calf (for worship) after clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty) had come to them. And We forgave them that! And We bestowed on Moses evident authority.
4:154. And We caused the Mount to tower above them at (the taking of) their covenant: and We bade them: Enter the gate, prostrate! and We bode them: Transgress not the Sabbath! and We took from them a firm covenant.
4:155. Then because of their breaking of their covenant, and their disbelieving in the revelations of Allah, and their slaying of the prophets wrongfully, and their saying: Our hearts are hardened - Nay, but Allah set a seal upon them for their disbelief, so that they believe not save a few -
4:156. And because of their disbelief and of their speaking against Mary a tremendous calumny;
4:157. And because of their saying: We slew the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, Allah's messenger - they slew him not nor crucified him, but it appeared so to them; and Look! those who disagree concerning it are in doubt thereof; they have no knowledge thereof save pursuit of a conjecture; they slew him not for certain.
4:158. But Allah took him up to Himself. Allah was ever Mighty, Wise. ¡

10:22. He it is Who makes you to go on the land and the sea till, when you (all) are in the ships and they sail with them with a fair breeze and they are glad therein, a storm-wind reaches them and the wave comes to them from every side and they deem that they are overwhelmed therein; (then) they cry to Allah, making their faith pure for Him only: If You deliver us from this, we truly will be of the thankful.
10:23. Yet when He has delivered them, behold! they rebel in the earth wrongfully. O mankind! Your rebellion is only against yourselves. (Ye have) enjoyment of the life of the world; then to Us is your return and We shall proclaim to you what you (all) used to do.  ¡

17:68. Feel you (all) then secure that He will not cause a slope of the land to engulf you, or send a sand-storm upon you, and then you (all) will find that you (all) have no protector?
17:69. Or feel you (all) secure that He will not return you to that (plight) a second time, and send against you a hurricane of wind and drown you for your thanklessness, and then you (all) will not find therein that you (all) have any avenger against Us?  ¡

54:33. The folk of Lot rejected warnings.
54:34. Lo! We sent a storm of stones upon them (all) save the family of Lot, whom We rescued in the last watch of the night,
54:35. As grace from Us. Thus We reward him who gives thanks.
54:36. And he indeed had warned them of Our blow, but they did doubt the warnings. ¡
2:58. And when We said: Go into this township and eat freely of that which is therein, and enter the gate prostrate, and say: "Repentance." We will forgive you your sins and will increase (reward) for the right-doers.  ¡

2:214. Or think you (all) that you (all) will enter paradise while yet there has not come to you the like of (that which came to) those who passed away before you? Affliction and adversity befell them, they were shaken as with earthquake, till the messenger (of Allah) and those who believed along with him said: When comes Allah's help? Now surely Allah's help is nigh.
2:215. They ask you, (O Muhammad), what they shall spend. Say: that which you (all) spend for good (must go) to parents and near kindred and orphans and the needy and the wayfarer. And whatever good you (all) do, Look! Allah is Aware of it. ¡

7:74. And remember how He made you viceroys after A'ad and gave you station in the earth. you (all) choose castles in the plains and hew the mountains into dwellings. So remember (all) the bounties of Allah and do not evil, making mischief in the earth.
7:75. The chieftains of his people, who were scornful, said to those whom they despised, to such of them as believed: Know you (all) that Salih is one sent from his Lord? They said: Look! In that wherewith he has been sent we are believers.
7:76. Those who were scornful said: Look! in that which you (all) believe we are disbelievers.
7:77. So they hamstrung the she-camel, and they flouted the commandment of their Lord, and they said: O Salih! Bring upon us that you threatenest if you art indeed of those sent (from Allah).
7:78. So the earthquake seized them, and morning found them prostrate in their dwelling-place. ¡

16:15. And He has cast into the earth firm hills that it quake not with you, and streams and roads that you (all) may find a way.
16:16. And landmarks (too), and by the star they find a way. ¡

21:31. And We have placed in the earth firm hills lest it quake with them, and We have placed therein ravines as roads that haply they may find their way.
21:32. And we have made the sky a roof withheld (from them). Yet they turn away from its portents. ¡

29:36. And to Midian We sent Shu'eyb, their brother. He said: O my people! Serve Allah, and look forward to the Last Day, and do not evil, making mischief, in the earth.

29:37. But they denied him, and the dreadful earthquake took them, and morning found them prostrate in their dwelling place. ¡
12:106. And most of them believe not in Allah except that they attribute partners (unto Him).
12:107. Deem they themselves secure from the coming on them of a pall of Allah's punishment, or the coming of the Hour suddenly while they are unaware? ¡

16:45. Are they who plan ill-deeds then secure that Allah will not cause the earth to swallow them, or that the doom will not come on them whence they know not? ¡

67:16. Have you (all) taken security from Him Who is in the heaven that He will not cause the earth to swallow you when lo! it is convulsed?
67:17. Or have you (all) taken security from Him Who is in the heaven that He will not let loose on you a hurricane? But you (all) shall know the manner of My warning.
67:18. And verily those before them denied, then (see) the manner of My wrath (with them)! ¡
