A Loving Mother and her Obedient Son
Grandma had asked Robert to open the meeting. Robert smiled as he stated,“We have a visitor tonight. As you know, Dylan is no stranger. We’ve all been friends most of our lives. He already calls Grandma, “Grandma”, so that makes him family, right? Let’s give him a big welcome.” In unison, the children yelled. “Welcome to Grandma’s Bible Club, Dillon!” Robert continued, “Let’s get on with our meeting.” As Ricky, Miranda and Shani took their places at the front of the room, everyone else stood to attention. As the children finished the pledges and had prayer, Grandma asked, “Who would like to show us what you learned about your Bible character?” Miranda raised her hand first. As she stepped toward the center of the room, she pointed to her nametag. “ My name is Hannah. “My husband’s name is Elkanah. He also has another wife. They have children together, but he and I didn’t have any. I could pretty well handle it, until we would make our yearly trip to the temple to worship and offer up sacrifice. I’d see Elkanah and Peninnah and their children, plus other families together. I felt so left out. My husband loved me very much and he couldn’t understand why I was so sad. “ One year, I felt so bad because I didn’t have a son, I decided to go into the temple and pray and ask God to please give me a son. I promised Him, if He would give me a son, I’d give him back to serve God all the days of his life. I also promised there would never be a razor put to his head.” Ricky interrupted. “Why did you promise not to cut his hair?” Grandma answered, “Because that would be a sign that he was consecrated to God.” As the little troop looked back to Miranda, she continued with her story. “ Guess what! God answered my prayer. He gave me a son and I named him Samuel, which means ‘asked of God.’ When he was old enough, I took him to the temple to live with Eli the priest. Every year when I go to visit Samuel, I take him a coat I’ve made for him. You know how fast boys grow,” laughed Miranda. “Don’t you miss him, Hannah?” asked Tori. “Oh yes! But I’d rather he be working in the Lord’s house. After all, God did give him to me. And by the way, I wound up having three sons and two daughters,” smiled Miranda. “That’s about all there is to tell about me,” she said as she walked back to her seat. “Very good, Miranda,” smiled Grandma. “I think I’d like to meet Hannah’s son,” Grandma said as she motioned for Ricky to come forward. Ricky walked slowly to the center of the room. His blue eyes sparkled as he said, “My name’s Samuel and I bet you can’t guess who my mom is.” The little troop laughed as they all yelled, “Hannah!” “As you know from the last character’s introduction, my mom prayed really hard for a son, and she got me. When I was a very small child, my mom took me to live in the temple with Eli, the priest. Eli taught me the duties of a priest. One night when I was sleeping I thought I heard Eli call my name. When I went to his room, he said he had not called me. I went back to bed and I heard my name again. I ran back to Eli’s room. Again he told me he had not called. The third time this happened, Eli told me to go back to bed. He said it must be God calling me. If I heard it again, he told me to answer, ‘Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth’. I did as I was instructed. Before Ricky could say anything else, Miranda inquired, “What did God want to tell you, Samuel?” Ricky looked at Grandma and explained, “Grandma, I wanted to memorize this scripture, but there was so much, I gave up. Is it alright if I read it from the Bible?” As Grandma nodded her approval, Ricky turned in his Bible to First Samuel 3:ll-14, and began reading. (11)“And the Lord said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle. (12) In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end. (13) For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.” He closed his Bible and continued his story. “Needless to say I didn’t sleep that night. I was so afraid to tell Eli what God had said to me. The next morning Eli asked me to tell him. “What was Eli’s reaction”, asked Phillip. Ricky thought a second before replying, “Eli knew he had done wrong by not stopping his children when they were doing wrong. He accepted what God had said.” As I grew older, God was with me, and he always kept his word. In the early part of my ministry, I served as a traveling judge. My home was in Ramah, but I made yearly trips to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah. I eventually became a judge with a permanent leadership office. Surrounding nations had kings over them. Our people started asking for a king to be over them. I knew of the evils that went along with the establishment of a royal house. I thought they were rejecting me, because they didn’t want me to be a judge. But the Lord said they weren’t rejecting me, they were rejecting Him. “Did they get their king?” asked Tori. “The first person I anointed was Saul,” continued Ricky. “What was Saul like?” asked Dillon. “Saul was handsome, likeable, and very tall. But he was disobedient to God. His false pride and extreme jealousy toward David were pretty much the ruination of Saul. Again, God used me to bring bad news to one of his servants. I reminded Saul that when he was small in his own sight, God had placed him in charge over many people. But because if his disobedience, God was rejecting him as king.” I reminded Saul that it is better to obey than to sacrifice. I told him that rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry,” explained Ricky. “What happened then,” asked Phillip? “Saul repented, but it was too late. God had already rejected him as king.” “Did they get another king?” asked Robert? “God had me to anoint a young shepherd boy called David. As soon as I anointed him, the spirit of the Lord came upon him.” “If you will check in your Bible, you’ll see I wrote two books. Well, actually, I wrote one and started the other. The second book was finished by an unknown author,” explained Ricky. “Did you ever go back to see Saul?” asked Dillon. “I was visited by Saul one more time. He had tried at different times to communicate with God, but God would not answer him. Saul found a woman who was a fortuneteller. He had her to call me from the grave. But, once again, I gave him bad news,” sighed Ricky. “That’s about all I can tell you about myself, I sure do hope you have enjoyed meeting me,” he laughed as he took his seat. Tori remarked, “I learned a lot today. I learned no matter how much good we do, if we don’t obey God, it’s all in vain.” “Yeah,” said Miranda. I learned no matter how afraid we might be of people, we should put our trust in God and obey Him.” Phillip spoke up, “Grandma, I was just thinking. Obeying God covers a lot of territory. We don’t just wait around for God to tell us what to do. He’s already instructed us in His Word. We can’t actually obey him if we don’t obey our parents. Sometimes when Mama and Daddy punish me for doing things they have taught me not to do, I want to tell them it’s my life. I’m only hurting myself. I can’t understand why they have to tell me what to do and not to do. But I realize now, if they don’t do everything they can, God will punish them as well as He punishes me.” After discussing the stories they had just heard, the little troop dismissed in prayer. As the children were leaving, Dillon approached Grandma. “Grandma Penny, I really enjoyed the Bible Club meeting. I’d like to be a part of it all the time. May I introduce myself as a Bible character at the next meeting?” “Of course, Dillon. Why don’t you be Daniel?” she suggested. “I’m looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting.”

commentswhy didn't you just copy the story from the bible onto the website? how is this creative writing? what you may consider doing in revision is rewriting the same story but with miranda and her brother acting in the way of the bible story. in other words what was significant about this story that made you write about it, right now it could have been any story out of any religious book.

commentsI don't know what age group you are trying to reach so it makes it really hard to rate. I think the story is ok for little children. To appeal to older children or young adults it needs more detail, more about the feelings of how it felt to wear the colored clothing and how they think Joseph must have felt. How that Joseph in his time was probably proud of his coat. How things were different then and how time changes things, but God never changes and still works through people.
