What is Sunday School?
(1) What is Sunday school? A school generally affiliated with a church, that offers religious instruction for children, and adults as well, on Sundays. Sunday school classes are usually grouped off into age groups. This way, the teacher can teach the same lesson on the students' age level.
(2) What is the aim of Sunday school?
The main purpose is to help the students learn about God's Word, and know how to apply it to their daily lives. (3) Why should children attend Sunday school?
(4) What is the best method to be used by Sunday school teachers to teach children? It has been my experience that when a child becomes involved, he tends to learn more. Know the child you are teaching. What works for one child, might not work for another. Learning can be boring, or it can be enjoyable. Children like attention, and they like competition. Even when children have a copy of the next week's lesson (quarterly), it's hard to get to get them to study in advance. I've told my class to always be prepared to teach, because they never know when I might call on one of them to teach. I try to write stories, that go along with the lesson, using the children as the characters. This seems to keep them interested most of the time. Sometimes, they do things to inspire another story. Recently, one of my students
surprised me by volunteering to teach the lesson. Following is the story I wrote
about that event. Robert Teaches Sunday School As Grandma Penny, Robert and Ricky enter their Sunday School classroom, Preacher Tommy comes in and hands each of them their new quarterlies. "I want to teach today, Grandma," pleads Robert. "Robert, you can't teach the class. We didn't even get our books in time to study our lesson," replied Grandma. "I still want to teach today," stated Robert in a honey sweet tone of voice. Grandma started to give him a definite "no" when something tugged at her heart. "Very well," smiled Grandma. "Go ahead. But, I might stop you at any point and tell you to let me finish," said Grandma, still worrying that this was not wise. After opening with prayer, Robert looked at his quarterly for a couple minutes. "Our lesson today is taken from Matthew 9:35-38, and Matthew 10:1-8," stated Robert as he took a long, deep breath. He began to read Matthew 9:35. "And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people." He looked out at the class, and explained, "Everywhere Jesus went, He healed the sick, and saved people." He continued reading verse 36. "But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd." He looked at Grandma for some help. Grandma smiled as she asked, "What are multitudes?" "Large groups of people," answered Robert. "Explain what moved with compassion on them means," prodded Grandma. "It means Jesus cared for them," replied Robert. "That's right, Robert. Jesus' heart went out to them. But what was going on that caused him to have this compassion at the time?" asked Grandma. "They were scattered abroad, meaning they were scattered all over the world. They were like sheep with no shepherd. That means they didn't have a leader to teach them God's Word. So they got weak and fainted. They weren't getting any spiritual food," exclaimed Robert. "Very good. Now, you're the teacher this morning, but I'm just trying to give you ideas to get your mind going," explained Grandma. "Read the next two verses and tell us what they mean." Robert read verse 37. "Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few", and looked at Grandma. "Grandma, I don't think I can teach this verse," he stated. "Sure you can. You need to read the next one, because they go together," encouraged Grandma. He then read verse 38. "Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest." "Oh yeah! We went over this at one of the Bible Club meetings. It means there are lots of lost people out in the world, but not enough soul winners. We're supposed to pray for God to send out preachers and teachers to bring them in," he continued. "That's right," agreed Grandma. "If God leads us to go out, we're to listen and obey." "Is that sort of like me feeling like God wanted me to teach today?" "I'm sure it is." "I guess He's preparing me to go out and witness, huh?" he querried. "You're doing great, Robert. Read the next verse," suggested Grandma. "Our next verse is Matthew 10:1," Robert explained. "And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease." He looked at Grandma as asked, "Grandma, didn't we read where they could only cast out unclean spirits by prayer and fasting?" "We sure did," answered Grandma. "Then, I guess Jesus gave them power to do certain things, but they still had to obey all his teachings to be able to use it," pondered Robert. "When you read the next few verses, after each verse, stop and tell us what you remember from our Bible Club lessons, about different disciples," suggested Grandma. Robert read verse 2. "Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother." "I wondered if Simon, Peter and Simon Peter were the same or three different people. Now I know. It's one person. I remember that when the soldiers came to take Jesus out of the garden, Peter cut one of the soldiers' ear off. Jesus put it back on." "I learned something," yelled Ricky. Andrew and Peter were brothers, and James and John were brothers." Robert continued with verse 3. "Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus." "We talked about Thomas at our Bible Club meeting last night," reminded Robert. "He didn't believe Jesus had risen until he could see the scars in his hands," he stated. Robert looked like he was in a deep study for a couple seconds before asking Grandma, "Do you think he actually doubted that Jesus had risen, or do you think he just didn't want to take a chance on being mislead?" Grandma was taken back a bit, and as she usually did, when asked a question she hadn't really thought through suggested, "That's a good subject for our next Bible Study. We'll do some research and see what the Bible has to say about it. "I just wondered. It made me think of how you don't listen to just anything anybody says, but have to have proof out of the Bible," added Robert. Not sure how this was meant, Grandma decided to take it as a compliment, and motioned for Robert to go on to verse 4. "Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him." "I remember Judas Iscariot. He's the one who betrayed Jesus by kissing him in the garden. He sold Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Then he went out and hung himself." Grandma looked at her watch. "Robert, our time is running out. Go ahead and read the remainder of the scripture before the bell rings," she told him. He then read verses 5-8. "These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give." He finished reading just as the bell rang. As they dismissed in prayer, Grandma thanked God for children who are so willing to be used. She also thanked Him for letting her see the children use what they had learned at the Bible Club meetings. God had allowed Robert to reach out farther than the Bible Club house to spread His Word. "This is what the Bible Club is all about," she thought.

commentswhy didn't you just copy the story from the bible onto the website? how is this creative writing? what you may consider doing in revision is rewriting the same story but with miranda and her brother acting in the way of the bible story. in other words what was significant about this story that made you write about it, right now it could have been any story out of any religious book.

commentsI don't know what age group you are trying to reach so it makes it really hard to rate. I think the story is ok for little children. To appeal to older children or young adults it needs more detail, more about the feelings of how it felt to wear the colored clothing and how they think Joseph must have felt. How that Joseph in his time was probably proud of his coat. How things were different then and how time changes things, but God never changes and still works through people.
