Joseph's Family Reunion

 

Once again, when the prayer and pledges were finished, Robert turned the meeting over to Grandma.

            Grandma said, “I know the subject that Tori is going to cover tonight is one of her favorite subjects.  I’ll ask her to come forward and give another presentation of Genesis, the Book of Beginnings.”  She smiled as Tori made her way to the front of the room.

            Tori began, “As Dylan told us at our last meeting, the famine had spread to other countries.  Joseph’s daddy, Jacob knew that there was food in Egypt.  He sent ten of his sons to go buy food.  He wouldn’t let the youngest go, because he remembered what had happened to Joseph.  He was afraid something would happen to Benjamin, so he kept him at home.”

            Tori looked at the little troop as she asked, “Do you remember when Joseph was a little boy and he had the dream that made his brothers think he was saying they would have to bow down to him?  Well, his dream came true.”

            Miranda held up a page that showed ten stick figures bowing and one standing.  “Of course, they didn’t know it was their brother they were bowing down to.  They just knew they had to have food to take back to their father and little brother,” she said.

            “Joseph recognized his brothers but pretended not to know them.  He asked them where they were from. They told him they had come from the land of Canaan to buy food.”

            “I think maybe Joseph remembered his brothers’ reactions to his dreams.  He accused them of being spies to find the secret of Egypt.  They explained to him that they had a younger brother at home and one brother was gone.”

            “Joseph said for one of them to go get their little brother while the others remained in prison.  He told them if they didn’t do that, he would know they were spies.”

            Miranda turned the page and Tori had drawn ten stick figures behind bars.  “Joseph put them in prison for three days.  Then he told them to leave one in prison and the rest of them were to take food home for their hungry family.  He told them to bring their younger brother back with them.”

            On the next page, Tori had drawn a man with his hands and feet tied.  “Joseph had taken Simeon and bound him in front of the others.  He then ordered his servants to fill their sacks with grain, and to put their money back in their sacks.”

            On the next page, she had drawn a man holding an open bag.  His mouth was opened wide and in a circle with an arrow pointed toward his mouth Tori had written; “My money is in my sack!”

            “They were afraid, because they thought Joseph would think they had stolen.  They thought that God was punishing them for what they had done to their brother so many years ago,” she explained.

            Tori continued.  “They told Jacob what Joseph had ordered them to do.  He refused to let them take Benjamin back with them.”

            “Finally, things go so bad that Jacob knew if he didn’t let them take Benjamin back with them, they would all starve to death.”

            “When Joseph saw Benjamin he realized he was the only full blooded brother he had.  When they left this time, Joseph had all their money put back in their sacks.  He also had his silver cup put in Benjamin’s sack.  After they were gone, he sent one of his men to run after them.  Joseph demanded they leave Benjamin with them because he had stolen the cup.  Of course, we know Benjamin didn’t really steal the cup,” she added.

            On the next page, Tori had drawn a man kneeling in front of another.  “Here, Judah fell on his knees and pleaded with Joseph.  He explained everything to him.  Joseph couldn’t keep his secret any longer.  He told them he was their brother Joseph.”

            Tori continued with her story.  “Joseph told them not to feel bad because of what they had done to him.  He explained that God had placed him where he was to save their lives.  Then he told them to go get their father and bring him back to live in the land of Goshen so he could take care of them.”

            “Jacob died there, but was taken back to the land of Canaan to be buried.  Joseph’s brothers were afraid that since their father was gone, Joseph would do them harm.  When they talked with him about this, he assured them they were safe.  He knew they had done him wrong, but God had taken the evil they had done and made good of it, so Joseph could save a lot of people’s lives.”

            “Joseph and his family lived in Egypt until he died.  He was buried in Egypt.”

            She looked at Grandma and said, “That’s the end of my story and the end of Genesis, the Book of Beginnings.”

why didn't you just copy the story from the bible onto the website? how is this creative writing? what you may consider doing in revision is rewriting the same story but with miranda and her brother acting in the way of the bible story. in other words what was significant about this story that made you write about it, right now it could have been any story out of any religious book.

I don't know what age group you are trying to reach so it makes it really hard to rate. I think the story is ok for little children. To appeal to older children or young adults it needs more detail, more about the feelings of how it felt to wear the colored clothing and how they think Joseph must have felt. How that Joseph in his time was probably proud of his coat. How things were different then and how time changes things, but God never changes and still works through people.
