Jacob's Ladder
Before the meeting, Grandma had told Robert to go ahead and do his presentation when the prayer and pledges were finished. Robert was a little nervous because he tried to prepare a lesson along with his presentation. “I guess if I’m going to be a minister when I grow up, I need to learn how to do some deep studying,” he remarked. “At our last meeting, we learned how Jacob had talked Esau into selling his birthright. When Esau threatened to kill Jacob as soon as their father died, Rebekah sent Jacob to her brother Laban.” “Phillip, would you hold up the first page for me?” he requested. He had drawn a man lying on the ground, under the stars with a stone under his head. Robert pointed to the picture. “As Jacob got into his journey, night came and Jacob had to stop to rest. He took a stone for a pillow and went to sleep. That night, Jacob had a dream. He saw a ladder reaching from the ground to Heaven. Angels were climbing up and down this ladder.” Phillip turned to the next page where Robert had drawn a ladder. “At the top of the ladder stood the Lord. God told Jacob that the land where he was would be his. He promised to watch over Jacob and keep him safe until he brought him back to this place. He promised Jacob that his children would be many and would be blessed and because of Jacob and his children, all the families of the earth would be blessed,” explained Robert. The next page showed a man pouring something on the stone. “When Jacob awoke, he poured oil on the stone he had used for a pillow and called the place Bethel. He made up his mind then and there, that if God would protect him, supply his needs and get him back to his father’s safely, he would always serve God.” “He also promised to give God a tenth,” he added. On the next page, Robert had drawn a man walking down a road. At the end of the road, he had drawn a well, with several stick figures and some animals. Robert pointed to the well. “Jacob continued on his journey and when he came near Laban’s place, he saw some shepherds at a well. He asked them where they were from. When they said, ‘We’re from Haran,’ Jacob asked if all was well with Laban.” Again, Phillip turned the page. Robert pointed to a girl standing at the well. “While they were talking, a shepherd girl came up to the well. They told Jacob that was Rachel, Laban’s daughter.” Robert’s next page showed a man watering the animals. “Jacob drew the water and watered the sheep for her. He kissed her and told her who he was.” As Phillip turned to the next page, Robert pointed to a man running toward another man. “After Rachel ran and told her father Jacob was there, Laban ran out to meet him,” he explained. “Jacob stayed with Laban and worked for him for a month. Laban offered to pay Jacob for his labor.” Robert continued to tell his story. “Since Jacob loved Rachel, he told Laban he would work for him for seven years if he would let him have Rachel for his wife.” “After seven years was up, Laban tricked Jacob. He gave him Rachel’s sister, Leah instead. Jacob had to work another seven years for Rachel.” Robert shook his head in disbelief as he continued. “Jacob wound up staying and working for Laban for twenty years. God told him to take his wives and children and return to his own land. They fled during the night, but Laban caught up with them. In the end, Jacob and Laban gathered stones and made a heap. They made a pact that neither would pass over the heap to harm the other. Laban kissed his children and returned to his own land.” “As he got into his journey, Jacob sent messengers to Esau, hoping to make peace with his brother,” continued Robert. “Later the messengers returned to let Jacob know that Esau and four hundred men were on their way to see him.” “Jacob remembered that Esau had threatened to kill him and he feared for himself, his wives and children. He prayed for God to protect them. He remembered God’s promise to him at Bethel.” “He sent a gift to his brother and hoped when they met that Esau would accept him. Then he sent his family with everything they owned across the brook to safety. He remained alone.” Robert motioned for Phillip to turn the page. There was an angel and a man. They looked like they might be wrestling. Robert laughed as he stated, “It’s a good think I like to watch wrestling. That’s probably why I knew how to draw this picture. He continued with his story. “All night, he wrestled with an angel until the angel blessed him.” “When Jacob and Esau finally met, all was forgiven and they were reunited as brothers.” Robert looked at Grandma as he said, “I’m so glad we have Sunday School, Children’s Church and Vacation Bible School. The lessons we have always help me when I’m studying for things like this in our Bible Club meetings.” He hesitated for a minute and continued. “With some of the things I’ve learned, I came to this conclusion about Jacob’s ladder. Daddy says we have to start at the bottom of the ladder and work our way up. I guess that’s what Jacob did.” “When he left home, he became homeless until he reached the home of Laban. He was alone. Well, he wasn’t really alone. He had God and the angels, but he probably felt like he no longer had a family.” “As he made his journey, he slept under the stars. He had to use a hard stone for a pillow to lay his head on.” “He worked seven years for Rachel. He was treated wrong when Laban gave him Leah instead. I think most of us would have given up,” said Robert. “But not Jacob! He worked another seven years and got the woman he wanted. Then he worked for Laban another six years.” He frowned as he exclaimed, “Laban had changed Jacob’s wages ten times.” Robert continued with his conclusion. “When Jacob left, he was accused of stealing Laban’s goods. But in the end, all his hard work paid off. Maybe not with man, but with God. That’s what counts,” he said. “Because Jacob was faithful, God blessed him and all his children.” “That’s about all I have to offer for my part of Genesis, the Book of Beginnings at this time.” On the way back to his seat, Robert laughed as he said, “Now all my hard work is going to pay off with some kind words from Grandma.” Grandma shook her head in amazement for a second before speaking. “My goodness! That was great, Robert. You children never cease to amaze me. Please keep studying, keep praying and hang in there. The best is yet to come.” The little group closed in prayer and went to do crafts while Grandma prepared refreshments.

commentswhy didn't you just copy the story from the bible onto the website? how is this creative writing? what you may consider doing in revision is rewriting the same story but with miranda and her brother acting in the way of the bible story. in other words what was significant about this story that made you write about it, right now it could have been any story out of any religious book.

commentsGreat beginning, but is missing the moral to the story - how Joseph became a great leader and later helped and forgave his brothers for their betrayal.

commentsI don't know what age group you are trying to reach so it makes it really hard to rate. I think the story is ok for little children. To appeal to older children or young adults it needs more detail, more about the feelings of how it felt to wear the colored clothing and how they think Joseph must have felt. How that Joseph in his time was probably proud of his coat. How things were different then and how time changes things, but God never changes and still works through people.
