You Can't Keep a Good Man Down

 

Robert had opened the Bible Club meeting by having the children stand and pledge allegiance to the American flag, the Christian flag and the Bible.  After they had finished praying the Lord’s Prayer together, he called on Dylan to introduce himself as the Bible character whose nametag he was wearing.

            Dylan walked slowly to the center of the room.  He just stood there for a second and looked at Grandma.  Grandma realized he had a slight case of stage fright.  “Go ahead, Dylan, you’re among friends.  I know you’ve studied hard, so you can do it,” encouraged Grandma.

            Dylan took a deep breath, and at first he looked down at the floor as he said, “My name is Daniel.  You can read about me in the book of Daniel.  That’s in the Old Testament.”

            He finally looked around the room.  He looked from one Bible club member to the other.  Tori smiled at him and Phillip gave him the thumbs up sign.  With that kind of encouragement from his friends his fear vanished.

            “Probably, if you have ever heard of me, you heard about how I was thrown into the lion’s den.

            “There was an order sent out that no man was to ask anything of any God or man for thirty days.  They could only ask King Darius.  Of course, this was a trick to get me in trouble.  I prayed three times a day and made no secret of it.  I knew God could do for me what no man could.  There was no way I was going to turn my back on my God to please man, even if it was the king.

            “The king liked me and didn’t want to hurt me, but a rule is a rule.  The rule was that if I go caught praying, I would be thrown into a den of lions.  Before the king had me thrown in, he assured me that my God would take care of me.

            “They put a stone at the mouth of the den.  The king sealed it with his own signet.  From what I can understand, King Darius didn’t sleep a wink all night for worrying about me.  He paced the floor and fasted all night.  He wouldn’t even listen to music.

            “As soon as morning came, the king went to the lion’s den to see if I was all right.  I told him that God sent His angel to shut the lions’ mouths.  They hadn’t even touched me.  Man, that was one more happy king.  The men who threw me into the lion’s den were also thrown in, along with their wives and children.  The angel didn’t protect them and they were eaten by the lions.

            “There’s a lot more I could tell you about myself, but I just thought you would enjoy hearing about that part of my life.  I guess it just goes to show you.  You can’t keep a good man down,” he said as he walked toward his seat.

            “Yeah,” yelled Miranda.  “You just proved that when you didn’t let your fear of talking in front of a group get you down.”

            “You did a great job, Dylan,” said Grandma.  “One day, we might want you to tell us about some of the dreams Daniel interpreted.”

            “At our next meeting, Shani will introduce herself to us.  I know she will do a good job, too.  Now who would like to dismiss us in prayer?” she asked.

            The room was filled with laughter as eight hands went up.  Grandma said, “Ricky, since you raised both of your hands, you must really want to pray, huh?”

            “Yes ma’am.  I’m starving and I know my prayer will be short and sweet,” he snickered.  “It will be serious, of course,” he continued.

            The children laughed and talked as they enjoyed their refreshments.  As they left to go home, Grandma once again thanked God for them and prayed His protection over them until they would meet again.

why didn't you just copy the story from the bible onto the website? how is this creative writing? what you may consider doing in revision is rewriting the same story but with miranda and her brother acting in the way of the bible story. in other words what was significant about this story that made you write about it, right now it could have been any story out of any religious book.

I don't know what age group you are trying to reach so it makes it really hard to rate. I think the story is ok for little children. To appeal to older children or young adults it needs more detail, more about the feelings of how it felt to wear the colored clothing and how they think Joseph must have felt. How that Joseph in his time was probably proud of his coat. How things were different then and how time changes things, but God never changes and still works through people.
