Touring Genesis

 

 Tori kept watching the front door while the children were saying their pledges.  As soon as the prayer was finished, Robert turned the meeting over to Grandma.  As Grandma called on Tori to give her presentation of the Book of Genesis, Billy Wayne came walking through the front door, carrying a large item covered with a cloth.      Tori smiled as she hugged her daddy and thanked him.  She then turned to the little group and explained.  “I asked Daddy to bring this to me after the meeting started, so I could surprise you.”

            As she unveiled her project, she continued to explain.  “Our neighbors bought a new dryer a couple weeks ago, and I asked them if I could have the box.  Daddy helped me cut out two sections to use as my book cover.  Mama and I covered it with contact paper and used large poster paper for the pages.  We cut holes in the left side of the cover and pages, and Miranda ran ribbon through the holes and tied them to hold the book together.  I didn’t realize when I volunteered to do this that it would turn out to be a family project.  I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed putting it together.”

            Everyone started laughing as she propped the book up for them to see.  “Now, that’s what I call a life size book,” laughed Phillip.

            “You’ve got a hole near the top as big as your head, Tori.  What’s that for?” snickered Ricky.

            “You’ll see,” replied Tori.  “I’ve asked my little sister to help me,” she said as she motioned for Miranda to come forward.  “Now everybody close your eyes and give us a minute to get set up.”

            When all eyes were opened, Ricky exclaimed, “So that’s what the big hole is for.  It is for your face.”

            “That’s right, Ricky,” replied Tori.  “I’ll stand behind the book and you can see me talking while Miranda turns the pages for me.”

            With this, Tori started her presentation.

            “Welcome to my humble abode,” she said.  “I’m the book of Genesis.  Please feel free to enter my pages.  First, check out the sign on the door.”

            With large letters on the front cover, Tori had printed, “GENESIS, THE BOOK OF BEGINNINGS”.

            Miranda slowly opened the book.  On the first page, Tori had written,  “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth., Genesis 1:1.”   In the lower right-hand corner, she had written a reference.  “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,  St. John 1:1-2”

            Again Miranda turned the page.  Tori explained, “This page is black, except as you see, one small square at the bottom of the page.”  Here she had pasted a piece of white paper on which was written, “…and darkness was upon the face of the deep…Genesis 1:2”.

Grandma smiled as she realized how much effort Tori had put into her little project. Miranda turned to the next page.  “I had to have help with this page,” Tori explained.  “Mama helped me paste half a white piece of poster paper on a black piece.”     

            She had placed white letters on the black side of the page and black letters on the white side, which said, “…and God divided the light from the darkness, Genesis 1:4”.

            On the next page, Tori had drawn a picture of the sky, land with clusters of grass and a tree.  She had finished with what looked like an ocean. In the sky she had drawn a cloud in which she had written the words “Genesis 1: 6-13.”

            As Miranda turned another page, Tori explained, “My next page is divided by one side having stars and a moon and the other having a bright yellow sun.  I decided it was too much trouble to have half a page black and half white,” she laughed.  “I got the idea for this page from Genesis, 1:14-19.”

            “Miranda helped me cut these pictures of animals out of magazines and paste them on this page.  This is taken from Genesis, 1:24-25,” she said.

            As Miranda turned to the next page, Tori explained, “Here’s Adam taking care of the animals and enjoying the beautiful Garden God had made.  Genesis, 1:26-27.”   

            The next page was empty.  Ricky yelled, “Hey! You forgot to put something on that page!”

            “No,” said Tori.  “God rested on this day.  Don’t you see the scripture reference in the lower right-hand corner? I got the idea for this page from Genesis, 2:2.”

            As Miranda turned to the next page, she decided she’d help Tori along.  “Tori, why does Adam look so sad?”

            “He is very lonely,” answered Tori. “Let’s turn the page and see what God does to help Adam not be so lonely.”

            “All right!” exclaimed Miranda.  “God gave Adam a wife to keep him company.”

            “I remember that story,” said Robert.  “God took one of Adam’s ribs and made Eve.”

            “That’s right, Robert.  I got this idea from Genesis, 2:18-24,” said Tori.

             “Grandma, you were right when you said it might take more than one meeting to cover each book.  The next two pages will sum up this part of Genesis.”

            At the top of the next page, Tori had drawn  a woman eating an apple.  Behind the woman was a snake hanging from a tree limb.  A little farther down the page, she had drawn a woman handing the apple to a man.  “This page shows Eve yielding to temptation and her husband doing the same.  They knew they were not supposed to eat of this fruit.  This came from Genesis, 3:1-8.  On the next page, Miranda has tried to add a little humor to my story.  You know how Miranda is, always trying to make us laugh.”

            As Miranda flipped the page, the little troop burst into laughter.  On this page Miranda had drawn little cartoons of a man working in the field with large drops of sweat dripping off his forehead.  Below that, she had drawn a woman holding a dirty looking child in one arm while stirring something in a pot. With a little imagination, you could tell that the pot was sitting on a cook stove.  Next, she had tried to draw an iron sitting on an ironing board, with a basket of clothes nearby.  At the bottom of the page, she had drawn six little stick figures, all different heights.  In the lower right-hand corner of the page, she had written Genesis, 3:9-…”.

            “Wait a minute,” said Ricky.  “You didn’t tell where your scripture ended.”

            “That’s to be sure I have your attention,” explained Miranda. “Let Tori finish her story.  I’m tired of turning these big ole pages,” she laughed.

            “I guess we would have to say Miranda got her idea from Genesis, 3:9-Revelation, 22:21,” explained Tori.  “Satan is still tempting people.  People keep yielding to him.  Man still has to work for a living, and no matter how much a woman works on a public job, she still has to have children, clean house and everything.  That’s all about my book of Genesis for now, Grandma.”

            “That was very good, Tori,” smiled Grandma.  “We can see that you and Miranda worked very hard on this project.  At our next meeting Phillip can take up where you left off.”

            “If someone will dismiss us in prayer, Sherry will help you with some crafts while I go prepare refreshments.  I also think Grandpa might want to come over and look at your book.”

            After the children had left to go home, Grandma thanked God for them and prayed his blessings and protection over them.

why didn't you just copy the story from the bible onto the website? how is this creative writing? what you may consider doing in revision is rewriting the same story but with miranda and her brother acting in the way of the bible story. in other words what was significant about this story that made you write about it, right now it could have been any story out of any religious book.

I don't know what age group you are trying to reach so it makes it really hard to rate. I think the story is ok for little children. To appeal to older children or young adults it needs more detail, more about the feelings of how it felt to wear the colored clothing and how they think Joseph must have felt. How that Joseph in his time was probably proud of his coat. How things were different then and how time changes things, but God never changes and still works through people.
