A Rainbow for Miranda

 

After the pledges and prayer, Robert turned the meeting over to Grandma.
Grandma said, “Tori and Phillip did a great job introducing us to Genesis, The Book of Beginnings. I’ve asked Miranda and Ricky to take up where Phillip left off. I did this because the next thing to be covered is the rainbow. Since they’re the youngest members, I thought this would be an easy subjet for them,” she said as she motioned for Miranda and Ricky to come forward.
Ricky giggled as he said, “Miranda asked me to hold this big ole page up while she talks to you. It’s just like a woman, making the man do all the hard work,” he continued.
Miranda cleared her throat before speaking. “Grandma told the truth about why she asked Ricky and me to tell about the rainbow, but she didn’t tell all of it.”
Her little voice trembled as she continued. “Grandma knows I’m terrified of bad weather. If somebody mentions a storm coming up, I freak out. When I hear the wind whistling through the trees outside my bedroom window, I think we’re having a hurricane or tornado. When it starts raining hard, I think we might have a flood. When we have a hurricane, I think the world is coming to an end.”
She paused, took a deep breath and continued. “Grandma and Grandpa both sat me down and talked with me about this,” she said. “But I think the best part is, they listened while I talked. Grandma said our feelings are real and whether they’re right or wrong, they’re there. She says I need to go ahead and admit the fears and do something about getting rid of them.”
Again she paused. “Grandpa told me some interesting facts. He said lightening is very dangerous and we should be careful. You don’t go outside when it’s lightening and if you happen to get caught outside, you should never run. You’re not supposed to play in water and don’t sit in front of a window or open door during a storm.”
Dylan’s eyes were wide with fear, as he interrupted. “That’s enough to scare anybody. What do you do during a storm? Hide in the closet?” he asked.
Miranda laughed as she answered. “No, silly, only during a toranado! Of course, I asked Grandpa that same question. He explained that there’s a lot you can do during a storm. If the power doesn’t go off, you can read or color. You can study your Sunday School lesson or sing softly.”
Ricky laughed as he interrupted, “That’s one time I do a lot of praying,”
Miranda rolled her eyes at Ricky as she continued. “Back to what Grandpa told me. He said lightening helps our food grow.”
Again, Dylan commented. “That doesn’t make a bit of sense to me. Look what it does to a tree when it strikes.”
Miranda replied. “That’s right Dylan, but Grandpa said it puts nitrogen in useable form, so when it comes down in the rain, it acts like fertilizer and makes things grow.”
Tori joined the discussion, “Rain puts badly needed water in the ground. This also helps our vegetables grow,” she added.
Phillip spoke up, “Yeah, but if it rains too hard, it destroys the plants.”
“I know, Phillip,” replied Miranda. “But Grandpa said rain also washes away dust and pollun to help our allergies not be so bad.”
“What about hard driving winds?” asked Tori.
By now, Miranda was talking with all the confidence Grandpa had. “Grandpa said the wind helps keep us cool. He said it brings the clouds that bring the rain that helps our gardens grow. Sometimes it blows the insects and mosquitoes away, giving us relief from them for awhile,” Miranda continued.
“I told Grandpa all this is good, but I’m still scared. That’s when Grandma talked to me,” explained Miranda.
“Again, Grandma explained how fears are real and we have to find ways to overcome them. She said the best thing to do is trust God.”
“I explained to her that I’d heard some people say Satan’s in charge of the weather and I’d heard some people say God was in charge. I felt that if Satan was in charge, I had reason to be afraid.”
“Grandma said as I grow older and trust god, these things won’t sound so scarey: especially if I study God’s Word and rightly divide the scripture. She reminded me that Satan is powerful and I should fear him. But I need to always remember God has power over Satan. I’m God’s child and He’ll protect me. She says Satan can only do what God allows him to do or in some cases what we allow him to do. I should never listen to him the way Eve did.”
“This leads me to mine and Ricky’s part of the Book of Beginnings,” she continued.
“Noah and his family had never seen rain. Yet, all of a sudden everything around them was being destroyed by it. The only thing they could do was trust God. They were obedient and God protected them. Noah didn’t know exactly what was going to happen. He just knew God was in control. All he could do was be patient and wait on God to take care of things. Grandma says that’s what we have to do.”
“Now, if you’ll look at mine and Ricky’s page, you’ll see a rainbow. It has the most beautiful colors we could find. I’ll let Ricky tell you why we chose the colors we did.” She took the page and held it where everybody could see it as she said, “Go ahead, Ricky, it’s your turn.”
Ricky pulled a ruler from his back pocket and pointed to the first color. “We chose soft blue, because it is a very comforting color. This color also reminds us of Heaven. What subject could be more comforting when we need God to take our fears away?’
He then pointed to the color yellow as he continued. “Yellow stands for the street of gold. That really gives us something to look forward to. It also stands for God’s promises. One of those promises is that He’ll never destroy the earth and every living thing with water again.”
“Look at this green. This reminds us that we have eternal life. It also reminds some of us of money,” he laughed. “Seriously, although we may not become millionaires and we’ll always have to work for our food, I think of another promise. God promised to supply all our needs. If that need is money, that’s what we’ll have,” he stated confidently.
As he pointed to the color purple he explained, “Purple stands for Royalty. He smiled as he said, “We’re King’s Kids.”
“Another color we used is pink. We decided on that because people use pink for girls. That reminds us of our mothers and grandmothers who teach us about God and His Word.”
Miranda spoke up, “From now on, when the weather’s bad, I’m gonna look beyond the scarey stuff and watch for the rainbow. I know God will protect me. Thanks Grandma and Grandpa. And thank you God.”

why didn't you just copy the story from the bible onto the website? how is this creative writing? what you may consider doing in revision is rewriting the same story but with miranda and her brother acting in the way of the bible story. in other words what was significant about this story that made you write about it, right now it could have been any story out of any religious book.

I don't know what age group you are trying to reach so it makes it really hard to rate. I think the story is ok for little children. To appeal to older children or young adults it needs more detail, more about the feelings of how it felt to wear the colored clothing and how they think Joseph must have felt. How that Joseph in his time was probably proud of his coat. How things were different then and how time changes things, but God never changes and still works through people.
