What's Wrong with this Picture

 

After the prayer and pledges, Robert turned the meeting over to Grandma.

 “Dylan has informed me that we get to play one of our favorite games with his presentation of Genesis, The Book of Beginnings.  I’m anxious to see what this is all about, so I’ll ask him to come forward,” said Grandma.

            As Phillip held up Dylan’s first page, Dylan proceeded with his presentation.

            “Let me give you just a little background before I go on,” suggested Dylan.

            “In Genesis 11:1, everybody had the same language.  In verse 2, they settled in the land of Shinar.  In verse 3 & 4, they decided to build a city and a tower.  Their plans were to build the tower high enough that the top of it would reach unto heaven.  They had two purposes in mind.  Number one, they wanted to make a name for themselves.  Number two, they didn’t want to be scattered all over the world,” he continued.

            He stepped back in mock disbelief.  “Oops!  There’s something wrong with this picture.  Who can tell me what it is?”

            He had drawn a tall building but had not put a roof on it. 

            Ricky held his sides as he laughed.  “Dylan, you didn’t finish your picture.”

            Phillip laughed as he pointed at the picture, and then at Dylan.  “Man, your daddy is a roofer.  How in the world could you forget to put the roof on your building?”

            “Oh, no.  I didn’t forget the roof.  I left it off on purpose.  Have you forgotten what story we’re covering?” asked Dylan, pretending to be offended.

            “Am I the only one who sees something else wrong with this picture?” he asked.

            Miranda looked puzzled as she stated.  “I don’t understand, Dylan.  How could anything else be wrong with the picture?  There’s nothing there but a building with no top.”

            “That’s right,” said Dylan.  “So, what’s wrong with this picture?”

            As the children sat in silence staring at the picture, Robert started going over the story in his mind.  “They’ve settled in a new place.  They’re all working together.  What more do they need?  Oh man!”, he yelled out.  “There’s no altar.  No place of worship.  Hey man, they’ve left God out of the picture!”

            At this outburst, Dylan wiped his brow as if he had really been sweating it.  “I was beginning to wonder if I was looking at this thing wrong,” he laughed.  “Finally, we can go to the next page.”

            In the middle of the next page, Dylan had drawn the same tall building with no top.  Next to the building he had drawn two guys.  Between the two guys were question marks.

            “Here God had confused their language, They could no longer work on the building because one couldn’t understand what the other was saying,” he explained.  “I tried to picture this happening with Daddy’s roofing crew.  I think I have a cartoon mind like Grandma says she has.  I can picture the guys on top of the roof yelling down to the one on the ground to bring up a bundle of shingles.  Because the guy on the ground can’t understand, he just looks up and smiles,” laughs Dylan.

            “Yeah,” agreed Ricky.  “I can see Daddy waving his hands in exasperation.  That was one of our spelling words last,” he added.  “The guy on the ground smiles and waves back,” he laughs.

            By this time the room is filled with laughter.

            Miranda speaks up.  “This reminds me of Uncle Jimmy teasing Grandma because sometimes she can’t hear good.”

            “I know,” laughed tori.  “Uncle Jimmy says if Grandma quietly nods her head in approval and smiles, that means she didn’t hear a word you said.  Isn’t that right, Grandma?” asked Tori.

            The little troop burst into laughter again as Grandma nodded and smiled.  Of course, Grandma heard every word and the children knew she did. 

            Dylan finally composed himself and said, “O.K. we had a good laugh.  It’s time to get serious and let me finish my story.  I’m about ready for refreshments.”

            As Phillip turned to the next page, Dylan continued.  “If you’ll notice, everybody is going in different directions.  They’re walking away from the building.  Some are carrying suitcases.  I got this idea from Genesis 11:8-9 where God confused their language and scattered them abroad upon all the face of the earth.  That’s the end of my story,” he said as he nodded for Grandma to take over.

            “Thank you, Dylan.  You did a great job,” said Grandma.  “Im really looking forward to our next presentation of Genesis, the Book of Beginnings,” she said.

            “We’ll ask Phillip to dismiss us in prayer.  While Sherry helps you with your crafts, I’ll go prepare refreshments,” she continued.

            As Grandma prepared refreshments, she could hear the children laughing and talking as they worked on their crafts.  She silently thanked God for children who, not only are willing to learn about God’s Word, but also willing to share what they’ve learned.  She prayed that they would always apply God’s Word to their daily lives.  She prayed that they would never leave God out of the picture.

why didn't you just copy the story from the bible onto the website? how is this creative writing? what you may consider doing in revision is rewriting the same story but with miranda and her brother acting in the way of the bible story. in other words what was significant about this story that made you write about it, right now it could have been any story out of any religious book.

I don't know what age group you are trying to reach so it makes it really hard to rate. I think the story is ok for little children. To appeal to older children or young adults it needs more detail, more about the feelings of how it felt to wear the colored clothing and how they think Joseph must have felt. How that Joseph in his time was probably proud of his coat. How things were different then and how time changes things, but God never changes and still works through people.
