We Are Our Neighbor's Bible

 

After the prayer and pledges had been said, Robert turned the meeting over to Grandma.

            At the last meeting, Grandma had suggested that Tori leave her book so the other children could add pages as they did their presentation of Genesis.  They had decided to use the book as part of the Bible Club decor.

            “Let’s thank Ms. Sherry for the easel she donated to the Bible Club”, said Grandma.  “That will be a great way to display our life-sized book.  Now, I know you’re all as anxious as I am to see what Phillip has for us,” she continued as she motioned for Phillip to come forward.

            Phillip hesitated for a few seconds before speaking.  “At first I was angry because I didn’t understand. If Tori pretended to be the book of Genesis last time, how could I be the book of Genesis this time?  I asked Mama how in the world could we all be the same book.”

            Robert spoke up.  “I’ve been wondering the same thing, Phillip.”

            “Me too,” added Miranda.

            Ricky blurted out, “I was thinking about how much taller Tori is than Miranda and me.  We’d have to cut a hole out of the bottom of the page for our faces,” he giggled.

            Phillip pointed to a framed picture hanging on the club house wall.

            “Uncle John drew this picture for Grandma when he was only eight years old.  Mama told me I needed to read the poem and think about my attitude.  We don’t know who the original author of the poem is, but Uncle John did a terrific job of drawing this little guy who says,

                        I am my neighbor’s Bible.

                        He reads me when we meet.

                        Today he reads me in the home:

                        Tomorrow in the street.

                        He may be relative or friend,

                        Or slight acquaintance be.

                        He may not even know my name,

                        Yet he is reading me.

            “I’ll bet nineteen years ago, when Uncle John drew this, nobody thought we’d be learning a lesson from it tonight.  I guess if we’re all our neighbor’s Bible, we can all be the book of Genesis, huh?” he laughed.

            “Tori told us about the beginning of the world, animals, man, woman, and sin,” he explained.

            As Robert held the first page, Phillip began his presentation. “This black page represents the world. Genesis 6:5-7. In our color-code game we learned that black represents sin.  The world had become so wicked that God regretted having put man here.”

            Phillip shook his head in disbelief as he continued.  “God had worked hard making a beautiful world with no problems or heartaches and Adam and Eve had to go mess things up by listening to someone besides God;  namely Satan,” he added.

            Robert spoke up, “That’s what our lesson in Children’s Church was about last week.  Miss Vicki said when we know something’s wrong, but we let someone talk us into doing it anyway, we’ve sinned just like Eve did when she listened to the serpent.”

            “Yeah,” said Tori.  “Miss Vicki reminded us that the wages of sin is death.  That began with Adam and Eve.”

            Phillip motioned for Robert to turn the page.

            “You’ll notice that this page is black except for this very small white dot in the middle,” explained Phillip.  “This idea comes from Genesis 6:8-9.  God decided to destroy the earth.  Because Noah was a godly man, God decided to spare him and his family.”

            Robert turned the page.  At the top of this page, Phillip had drawn some trees, with several  logs lying on the ground.

            “God told Noah to build an ark out of gopher wood,” explained Phillip.  “It had to be large enough to hold Noah, his wife, his three sons, their wives, two of every kind of animal, and enough food to eat while they were on the ark.  Genesis 6:14-21.”

            On the next page Phillip had drawn a large, three-story boat, sitting on dry land.

            On the next page, he had drawn several small scenes.  Each showed the ark floating on water.  But in each scene, you could see that the ark was getting closer to the tree tops.  He had drawn streaks on the page to look like hard driving rain.

            The next page showed no trees at all.  “You’ll notice there is no sign of trees or mountains,” explained Phillip. “I got this idea from Genesis 7:17.  It rained forty days and nights,” he added.

            The next page showed the ark on top of a mountain, but you could barely see the top of the mountain.  He had written under the picture, “Genesis 8:4 -5.”

            “This is next to the last page,” offered Phillip.  He had drawn several small arks with circles beside them.  In the first circle he had drawn a raven to look like he was flying away from the ark.  In the second circle he had drawn a dove facing the ark, with nothing in his mouth.  The next circle held a dove facing the ark.  This dove had an olive leaf  in it’s mouth. 

            Phillip pointed to the last circle, in which he had written Genesis 8:7-12.  “This means the dove didn’t return the last time Noah sent it out,” he explained.

            On the last page, Phillip had drawn an altar.  “This comes from Genesis 8:20,” he stated.  “That’s all of my story,” he announced as he went to his seat.

            The little troop dismissed in prayer.  While Grandma prepared refreshments, Sherry helped Phillip add his pages to their  Book of Beginnings.

why didn't you just copy the story from the bible onto the website? how is this creative writing? what you may consider doing in revision is rewriting the same story but with miranda and her brother acting in the way of the bible story. in other words what was significant about this story that made you write about it, right now it could have been any story out of any religious book.

I don't know what age group you are trying to reach so it makes it really hard to rate. I think the story is ok for little children. To appeal to older children or young adults it needs more detail, more about the feelings of how it felt to wear the colored clothing and how they think Joseph must have felt. How that Joseph in his time was probably proud of his coat. How things were different then and how time changes things, but God never changes and still works through people.
