Joseph Goes to Egypt
After the prayer and pledges had been finished, Robert turned the meeting over to Grandma as usual. Grandma reminded the children of some of the stories they had covered recently. “After we finish the book of Genesis, we probably have a review and then a quiz. So please continue to pay close attention. You have all done such a beautiful job. I’m really proud of you. Now, we’ll ask Dylan to come forward and make his presentation of Genesis, the Book of Beginnings.” Dylan asked Robert if he would turn the pages for him. “Hi! As a part of the book of Genesis, I have some very good news about Joseph. The merchants, who bought him from his brothers, sold him to an officer of Pharaoh. The guy’s name was Potiphar. He was a captain of the guard.” As Robert turned the page, Dylan began to explain. “This is Joseph. He’s not wearing his coat of many colors, because that’s what his brothers used to convince Jacob that Joseph had been killed by wild animals. But he’s still dressed in bright beautiful colors. He has become a very special servant. His master saw that God was with Joseph and blessed everything he did. He even let Joseph live in his house. Because of this, God even blessed the Egyptian’s house.” With raised eyebrows and a smile, Dylan stated, “This shows me that if we take care of God’s man, God will bless us.” Dylan frowned as he said, “Right when things were going so good for Joseph, his master’s wife flirted with Joseph. When Joseph didn’t flirt back, she was offended and wanted to hurt him. She told lies on Joseph to her husband, and Joseph was thrown in prison.” Robert then turned the page. Dylan had drawn a picture of Joseph standing behind prison bars. Dylan continued. “But guess what! God was still looking out for Joseph. He caused the jailkeeper to like him. He put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners. No matter what Joseph did, God blessed him and made him prosper.” “Remember how Joseph used to have dreams? Well, now he could interpret other people’s dreams,” explained Dylan. He motioned for Robert to turn the page. Dylan had drawn two different pictures on his page. Each was a picture of a man sleeping. “These two guys are dreaming. They are dreaming different dreams. One is the King of Egypt’s baker and one is his butler. They had both been thrown in prison.” As Robert turned the page, Dylan pointed to a vine with three branches. On the branches, were clusters of grapes. He had also drawn a cup. “Here the butler told Joseph about his dream of crushing the grapes into the cup and placing it into Pharaoh’s hand,” explained Dylan. “Joseph interpreted the dream for him. He told the butler that he would be taken out of prison in three days and placed back at his job to hand Pharaoh his cup like he use to do. Then Joseph asked the butler to put in a good word for him when he got back to Pharaoh.” Dylan frowned as Robert turned to the next page. There was a picture of a man with three baskets on his head. It looked like birds were eating something out of the baskets. “Joseph interpreted the baker’s dream. He told the baker that in three days Pharaoh would hang him on a tree and the birds would eat the baker’s flesh. In three days, both dreams came true,” remarked Dylan. Dylan continued, “Two years later, Pharaoh dreamed two different dreams.” He motioned for Robert to turn the page. The children giggled as they saw what Dylan had drawn. “I admit I’m not the best artist in the world, but these are cows,” he laughed good-naturedly. “If you will notice, there are seven scrawny cows and seven fat cows. Wait until you see the next page,” he laughed. When Robert turned the next page, Dylan pointed to seven scrawny cows. Ricky spoke up, “Hey, where did the fat cows go?” Dylan proceeded to explain. “The scrawny cows ate them. That’s what happened in Pharaoh’s first dream. On the next page, Dylan had drawn seven fat ears of corn on a stalk. Below these, he had drawn seven skinny ears of corn. “Now,” said Dylan, “if Robert will turn to the next page, you’ll see only seven skinny ears of corn. In Pharaoh’s dream, the skinny ears of corn ate the fat ears of corn.” The next day, Pharaoh was a nervous wreck. Nobody could interpret his dreams. The butler remembered Joseph. He told Pharaoh about him and Pharaoh sent for Joseph. Dylan continued. “Joseph told Pharaoh that God was showing him what was about to happen. It meant that there would be seven good years, and then seven years of famine. He told Pharaoh what he needed to do was to put someone in charge of seeing that a fifth of the harvest for the next seven years was put in storage for the seven years of famine.” Dylan grinned as he exclaimed, “Guess who Pharaoh put in charge? Yep, he put Joseph in charge of all the land of Egypt. Joseph was no longer in prison.” “What happened then?” asked Miranda. Dylan continued, “During the seven good years, Joseph gathered up food and stored it in the cities. Then during the years of famine, Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold food to the Egyptians. Then it got so bad in other countries that people came to Egypt to buy food from Joseph.” Dylan looked at Grandma and said, “That’s the end of my part of Genesis, the Book of Beginnings.” “Thank you Dylan,” said Grandma. “That was a great story. You did well. I’m anxious to hear the next presentation,” she stated. “Now if someone will dismiss us in prayer, you can get busy with your crafts while I go prepare refreshments. Although Tori will be doing the next story, I want each of you to read it and think about it so your will be familiar with what she will be talking about. I can hardly wait,” she exclaimed. Again Grandma thanked God for the children and prayed that they would not only see these stories just as stories, but that they would see the spirituality of them.”

commentswhy didn't you just copy the story from the bible onto the website? how is this creative writing? what you may consider doing in revision is rewriting the same story but with miranda and her brother acting in the way of the bible story. in other words what was significant about this story that made you write about it, right now it could have been any story out of any religious book.

commentsI don't know what age group you are trying to reach so it makes it really hard to rate. I think the story is ok for little children. To appeal to older children or young adults it needs more detail, more about the feelings of how it felt to wear the colored clothing and how they think Joseph must have felt. How that Joseph in his time was probably proud of his coat. How things were different then and how time changes things, but God never changes and still works through people.
